Some people spend a lifetime reaching their heaviest weight, but for Denise Bryers, it took only months to go from average to obese. Bryers lost her job, had to foreclose on her home and raise three children alone, and consequently became severely depressed. “I had had a job since age 14 and was proud of how well I had been doing raising my kids on my own,” she says. “So to be in a position where I felt completely helpless led me to eat.”

She self-medicated with pizza, chicken wings, margaritas and cigarettes, and fast-food takeout was the norm for her family. “It wasn’t until I finally landed a job and was forced to shop for all new work attire that I realized I had gained a lot of weight and could no longer fit in a size 10/12,” she says. “I had ‘graduated’ to a size 18/20 in a matter of months.”  Bryers did some research on eating healthier and discovered Oxygen magazine and Tosca Reno’s eat-clean plan. She absorbed this information like a sponge and did a 180 with her nutrition. She then set a weight-loss goal of 30 pounds and started walking outside or on a treadmill, following online high-intensity interval training programs and doing workout DVDs at home. Within four months, Bryers was back to her normal weight and the whole family was eating healthier.  But now she wanted more.

“My inspiration came from Oxygen,” she says. “I wanted to shape and tone my body to look like a figure competitor, but I didn’t know how to lift weights or what to do, so I found a personal trainer in my area who specialized in competitive athletes.” Seven days a week Bryers did strength training and cardio, and she began to research healthy eating. “A higher-protein and lower-carb program helped me break through some major plateaus,” she says.

The next year she was stage-ready — though she didn’t really believe it. “I went through a great deal of fear and doubt, and the week before my competition, I was a ball of emotions,” she says. “But I resolved that no matter what the outcome, I would do my best.” Bryers competed in the 2013 Cincinnati Natural and placed fourth in the novice division. “I went out there, I wore a bikini for the first time in my life, met other women like myself and had a blast,” she says. “It was an amazing experience.”

Since then, she has done two more competitions, ran a half marathon and hopes to earn her pro card in figure some day soon. Bryers also became a certified personal trainer and opened her own business, Boot Camp Cincinnati. “If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life,” she says. “This is my life. I live each day to help motivate, coach, train and inspire others to reach their goals.”

My personal transformation story began February 2013.  The partying, drinking alcohol, poor eating habits, low self esteem and depression I suffered from an previous abusive relationship left me wanting to transform my life for the better.  I heard about Bootcamp Cincinnati on Facebook and started attending. Not only did I learn about being and staying consistent but I also learned about effective fitness and nutrition. My passion for Boot Camp Cincinnati led me to volunteer to manage accounting services for the organization.  Initially I just wanted to lose weight which I did, but was then interested in taking my fitness to the next level and I began weight training September 2013.  I have lost about 60 pounds and my passion for weight training ultimately led me to compete in my very first NPC Figure Competition October 2014.  I placed 4th in Pure Novice and 4th in Open Figure class D.  In April 2015, I competed in my 2nd competition and placed 4th in Open Figure Class D and 5th in Masters Figure Over 40 and have since competed two more times, 2015 and 2016 with plans to compete in 2017.

My passion has evolved even more to help other people reach their fitness goals.   I love to inspire and encourage others with my favorite motto, "trust the process", which was instilled in me at the beginning of my journey at Boot Camp Cincinnati. Weight loss is not an overnight process or a quick fix, it is a healthy lifestyle change that requires patience, dedication and consistency.

At the age of 39,  I needed a change in my life! I was living with a lot of depression and loss. In 2010 I lost my father due to complications from diabetes an I wanted to make sure that I stayed here as long as possible for my four boys. I've been training for 3 yrs now and what a magnificent  change it has brought into my life! Not only did my outward appearance change but it also did the biggest transformation on the inside of me! I found new found strength , confidence and beauty. And also gained and maintained  peace and joy! I've been that overweight person with no hope...but there's always hope! I know because I've made it the other side of hope, so let me help you reach your weight loss and fitness goals! We can do this together!

My passion for health, wellness and fitness came as early as high school where I played volleyball and ran track. After high school, I hired a trainer so that I could keep up my strength and further my love of being in shape.  At age 20, I got married and everything stopped. I lost my passion for fitness as I put my focus on my family, my husband and my three boys. As my marriage took a turn for the worst, I found myself becoming a victim of domestic violence. After 7 years of violence, I lost over 20 pounds, became extremely depressed and ultimately said no more.  I took my children and left to start a new life. During this time I started my own salon called Hair Therapy, Health and Wellness Salon, I gained control of my own home, and rediscovered my passion for fitness.  I began working out again, I rebuilt my appetite, and began to experience healthy weight gain through muscle development.  October 2014, I attended a local bodybuilding competition and for the first time I saw women, who looked just like me, compete as NPC Figure Competitors. I then became inspired to compete after seeing Denise, Shannon, Mimi and my friend Narcissa, compete.  After that show, I spent a year in the gym working on my physique and competed for the very first time with my boyfriend.  I placed First in Open Figure and placed 3rd in Novice Figure.  Six months later I competed in the Cincinnati Natural and placed 2nd in Open Figure.  I continue to train as my focus in now qualifying for Jr. Nationals 2017.
